Our Sustainability Commitment

At Studio Markanda, sustainability is not an add-on - It’s the foundation of how we design, build, and operate every day. We believe that the most sustainable product is one that never needs to be replaced. That’s why we create furniture and millwork that are purpose-built, long-lasting and made to be cherished for generations.

Our approach to sustainability focuses on three core pillars: Materials, Processes, and People & Logistics. Each pillar reflects our commitment to minimizing waste, reducing emissions, and prioritizing human well-being—both in the homes we contribute to and in the community we work within

Materials: Responsible, Renewable, and Circular

We primarily use FSC-certified solid wood and veneers, ensuring our materials come from responsibly managed forests.

  1. Solid wood offcuts are saved for future projects. Smaller hardwood pieces are up-cycled into cooking or heating fuel, ensuring every part of the log is used.

  2. Larger sheet-goods offcuts are reused for shop jigs, fixtures, shipping supports, and prototyping, reducing our need for new materials.

  3. When producing custom veneers, we prefer low-formaldehyde particle-core panels to reduce off-gassing and improve indoor air quality.

  4. We avoid finishes that introduce toxins into your home. Instead, we use natural oil-based, low-VOC finishes, applied by hand using up-cycled cotton cloths.

Processes: Low waste, High craftsmanship

We design our workflow to protect resources and eliminate unnecessary waste.

  • Our CNC machining uses specialized nesting software that optimizes panel usage and significantly reduces scrap.

  • We do not use water in our production process, helping us conserve one of our most precious natural resources.

  • We build products that are repairable, not disposable—allowing homeowners to maintain, refinish, and enjoy their furniture for decades.

People & Logistics: Local Impact, Low Emissions

We keep our footprint intentionally small.

  • Our team lives within a few kilometres of the shop, allowing most of us to walk or bike to work, reducing daily transportation emissions.

  • For site visits and installations, we use compact, fuel-efficient vehicles.

  • For large deliveries, we choose car-share cargo vans and responsible freight partners to reduce unnecessary trips and emissions.

  • We believe in supporting our local community through local production, local materials whenever possible, and a commitment to creating healthy, toxin-free interiors.
